Shopping for Mittens

Children’s author Niimi Nankichi (1913-1943) has been long loved by Japanese children, and his most popular work of all has been newly illustrated by a contemporary artist. When a fox cub’s front paws get cold as it plays in the snow, the mother fox turns one of the cub’s front paws into a child’s hand, gives it couple of coins, and sends it to the store. The fox cub holds out the wrong paw, but since the human sells it the glove anyway, it isn’t at all afraid. When it gets home, its mother also says, “I suppose it’s possible that humans really are good.” The illustrations capture the love between the mother fox and her cub amidst the snowy landscape.
