文様とは、「着るものや日用品、建物などを飾りつけるために描かれた模様」とのこと。文様は、縄文時代から土器や人形に描かれていたし、現代でもラーメン鉢や衣服に描かれている。文様のモチーフは、植物、動物、天体や自然などさまざまだし、線や図形を組みあわせた幾何学文様もある。本書は、こうした多種多様な文様を紹介するだけでなく、地図で世界各地の文様の違いや伝播を見せてくれる。文様について楽しく学べる絵本。巻末に文様用語集や豆知識もついている。
