雨の日に、ふたりだけで留守番をしている兄のネノと妹のキフが、窓の外をながめていると、フキの葉の傘をさしたカエル、たくさんのオタマジャクシ、くるくる回るカタツムリ、踊っている木や草や野菜などが次々にあらわれる。そして魚に誘われて向こうの世界にとびこんだ兄妹は、困っている小さな動物たちを笹舟をたくさん作ってのせていく。やがてお母さんが帰ってきて、子どもたちは現実に戻る。「あめがふるふるふるふる・・・」という言葉が効果的に使われ、力強い絵がファンタジー世界を楽しむ子どもをうまく表現した絵本。

It Rains and It Pours
Neno and his younger sister Kifu are home alone on a rainy day. As they gaze out the window, they slip into a fantasy world. One by one strange things come into view: a frog with a butterbur leaf umbrella, a horde of tadpoles, snails spinning round and round, huge trees and vegetables. Dancing joyfully, Neno and Kifu weave boats from blades of bamboo grass to help little animals get through the rain. When their mother comes home, they return to reality.
