以前『くぎになったソロモン」というタイトルで、セーラー出版から出ていた絵本ですが、翻訳が小さい子ども向けにやや簡略化されているように思い、新たに訳し直しました。翻訳も装丁も、いちいち原書出版社に送って了解を得なければならず、編集の方たちが大変でした。
今回またじっくりスタイグの絵を見ることになったのですが、ウサギやネコの表情など、簡単な線でありながら、とっても味わい深いと再認識。それにしても、ウサギのお父さんは家の中でもいつもスーツにネクタイ姿なんですよ。おもしろいですね。

『日小見不思議草紙』（読み物）をおすすめします。
江戸時代を舞台にした5篇のファンタジー短編集。不思議な刀のおかげで鼻にタンポポが咲き、相手が笑ってしまうので戦わずして勝てる侍の話、野原で出会った不思議な女の子にすばらしい絵の具をもらって出世する絵描きの話、クマの助けを借りて一夜にして堰堤を築く話など、どれも短いなりにまとまりがよく、おもしろく読める。それぞれの短編の前後に江戸時代と現代を結びつける仕掛けもあり、虚実の境がわざとあいまいになっている。ユーモラスな味わいを支えている挿絵もいい。日本児童文学者協会新人賞受賞作。

A collection of five fantasy stories set in the Edo period. A samurai wins without fighting thanks to his magical sword, which makes dandelions bloom from his own nose resulting in laughter; an artist becomes successful after being given some amazing paints by a mysterious girl he met in a meadow; a dam is built to prevent the river from flooding, with help from some bears…all the stories are short, but well-constructed and fun to read. Each also has something that connects the Edo period with the present, and the border between fact and fiction is deliberately blurred. The illustrations add a humorous touch.
